THE BIRTH OF THE VILLA
In the mid-20th century,
from the late 1920s to the mid-1930s, the Dubrovnik region witnessed the construction of three monumental structures – Villa Banac in Cavtat, the Museum of Modern Art in Ploče, and the ‘presidential villa’ in Lapad. Each of these buildings, a witness to its own story, was the result of collaboration between Božo Banac, architects Harold Bilinić and Lavoslav Horvat, and sculptor Ivan Meštrović.
CONNECTION TO IVAN MEŠTROVIĆ
Meštrović’s art is woven into the foundations of Villa Banac.
The longstanding friendship between Božo Banac and the sculptor resulted in the construction of a mausoleum for Marija Račić Banac, marking the beginning of the Villa Banac story. In collaboration with architects Bilinić and Horvat, Meštrović laid the foundations for one of the most exceptional residences in the Dubrovnik region.
MEMORIES OF THE PAST
In 1928,
Villa Banac rose above Cavtat, becoming an icon of architecture and luxury. With its two floors, symmetrical arrangement of openings, and richly profiled frames, this villa not only captivates with aesthetics but also reflects a deep connection to the surrounding landscape.
BANAC – MORE THAN AN ENTREPRENEUR
Božo Banac was not just a successful entrepreneur in the shipping industry.
He was also a visionary with serious intentions to invest in tourism. The nationalization of Villa Banac after World War II transformed this refined residence into a resort for the Macedonian federal government. However, the villa’s doors would occasionally open for family vacations and distinguished guests, including the Duke of Kent.
